san francisco art garden
A newly retired designer could finally shift focus to home and wanted a garden to beautify the tiny, unused back yard of her classic Victorian home with industrial interior accents. The garden needed to reflect her passion for the creative arts, use as much reclaimed and industrial material as possible, and showcase handmade art and textiles from her personal collection.
The dry-laid bluestone patio establishes a foundation for the space and a place to view the growing wall made from repurposed handmade and hand-painted fabric bags. The hogwire fencing material repeats as a support for screening vines around the staircase. Stock tank planters accommodate an herb garden and raise the level of the Arbutus tree planted to provide privacy for the first-floor rental. The graphic quality of the garden layout provides visual interest from the upper floors of the home. Finally, the mostly enclosed window well becomes a glass garden with reclaimed glass mulch, repurposed cut glass, and stalks of glass bamboo.
